Cayo Costa is a barrier Island located to the South of Boca Grande and to the North of Sanibel and Captiva Islands. This pristine island is only accessible by boat or ferry and is almost entirely made up of Cayo Costa State Park. Cayo Costa is a great example of the untouched barrier islands that once littered Florida’s coastline. There are nine miles of unspoiled beaches, as well as six miles of hiking trails that meander through the pine and oak forests in the interior of the island. You will see many types of flowers and birds among the mangrove swamps. Calusa Indians once lived here, and the park offers programs explaining how they thrived here so many years ago in the parks amphitheatre. If you’re a fisherman, you are in luck because some of the best Tarpon fishing in the world is here. You will also find sheepshead, trout, snook, and flounder in abundance.
Camping is the big draw at Cayo Costa State Park, with primitive cabins as well as tent camping sites. The facilities offered are restrooms, cold showers, picnic tables and charcoal grills. Camping here makes you feel as if you are shipwrecked on a desert island, with a sunset view over the gulf that is simply astounding. There are no real estate opportunities on this island, but we thought it was such a nice area we would include it on our site anyway! Directions: Accessible only by ferry or private boat. Reservations required on the ferry service. Call Tropic Star of Pine Island at 239-283-0015.
Number of Sites: 30 campsites; 12 cabins Open Year Round: Open Year-Round
