Murdock Village is a redevelopment project that is proposed for the western edge of Port Charlotte. The development will convert old, mostly empty subdivisions that were originally created by General Development Corp. many years ago. The plan calls for a redevelopment of Charlotte County owned 1200 acres into a busy new urban center. It will be bordered by State Road 776 and U.S. 41. The idea is to create an actual downtown area for Port Charlotte, which currently does not exist.
There have been six developers vying to win the contract for Murdock Village. The winner of the contact was Stock Development of Naples, Florida. Stock Development on October 4th 2006 announced that they are abandoning the project due to market conditions. As of the time of this writing, the future of Murdock Village is unsure.
